Programs Tailored to the Individual
We serve people with a variety of cognitive disabilities, including brain injury, intellectual and developmental disabilities and mental illness. The ultimate goal of LiveOak is to promote well-being and encourage active lifestyles that engage residents, fostering growth and learning. That’s why each of our programs is designed to offer variety and spontaneity, interactions within the community, and opportunities for residents to pursue their interests and participate in activities they enjoy. The historic, quaint city of San Marcos, set along the beautiful San Marcos River, is the gateway to the Texas Hill Country and offers a variety of possibilities for recreation and community involvement, including shopping, bowling, outings to the library, restaurants, movies and museums, attending church and public events, and exercising at the San Marcos Activity Center. Volunteerism is also encouraged.
LiveOak’s rural residence is ideal for individuals requiring a daily structured routine balanced with plenty of opportunities for fun and enjoyment. Just 7 miles south of San Marcos, Texas, you’ll find our setting on 8 beautiful acres surrounded by farmland. Both staff and residents have worked hard to create an inviting peaceful atmosphere, with walkways shaded by large oak trees, a swimming pool, landscaped gardens, a workshop, farm animals and personal pets. LiveOak offers an intimate, home environment that provides residents with private rooms that they’re encouraged to decorate as they please, with photos of family and friends, art, furniture and mementoes expressing their individuality.
LiveOak is a vibrant and active community. Residents share in household chores and assist with the upkeep of the grounds, responsibilities that give them a sense of personal belonging, contribution, and pride in their community. Residents can participate in a variety of volunteer work, whether it’s helping out at Meals on Wheels, the Mother’s Day Out Program, church events or the local animal shelter. On the weekends, the staff plans special events and trips out into the community—after all, life can’t be all work and no play!
Our Community Living Program (CLP) offers a continuum of support to our residents living in more independent settings in San Marcos. Our CLP is comprised of a small attractive group home, the SmithHouse, and support services for individuals who live on their own. Individuals participating in our CLP have the opportunity to pursue employment, volunteer services, adult education or academics and take full advantage of the array of resources available in the area. Community outings make the most of the local cultural and entertainment events in San Marcos, Austin, San Antonio and central Texas area. Activities are designed to offer enough support for each person to be successful, achieve personal milestones and take pride in a job well done. The combination of meaningful work, enjoyable recreation and social activities, organized community involvement, and a comfortable living environment contributes greatly to each person enjoying a good life.
SmithHouse is located a couple of miles from downtown San Marcos, and each resident enjoys a private room and great autonomy. SmithHouse provides an active structured environment seven days a week for those needing less support and who have a desire to live, work or volunteer in the community. Daily routines, which resemble those one might find in anyone’s home, include personal hygiene, household chores, meal planning and preparation, and money management. Residents also participate in regular household meetings and make time in their schedules for exercise, work or volunteering in the community. The city bus runs through the area, providing easy transportation throughout San Marcos.
